5.0 out of 5 stars A Short But Sweet Guide to Five Fantastic Road Trips, July 29, 2011

This review is from: 5 of the USA's Best Trips (Kindle Edition)
Looking through this short book made me want to get in my car and go on a road trip! This book describes five short road trips (the between about 150 miles long and 400 miles long), each with a different theme and in a different region of the USA. There's one trip in New England (fall foliage and local foods), one in the Southeast, one in California, one in the Midwest (cheese and beer themed, my personal favorite) and one in the Pacific Northwest (a trip on Amtrak, for folks who want to go on a road trip but leave the car behind.)

Each trip has a complete itinerary that includes tips for where to find the best meals, lodging and attractions on your route.

If you're trying to plan a trip, this book will certainly provide you with some food for thought.

This is a great little guide for 5 places to go in the U.S. to vacation. First is a trip to western Virginia for the blue grass and old time music venues that are between the Blue Ridge and the Appalachian Mountains. You'll see where the Carter family started their rise to fame (June Carter Cash and other family members) and you're also in for a treat as you take in the breathtaking beauty of the area. Make your way to Floyd, VA and you'll find great music and the best fried chicken in Virginia.

Second on the itinerary is a trip to Vermont in the autumn of the year. There is an abundance of farmstands overflowing with fresh produce, and take in the well-known beautiful fall foliage of the area. A good number of restaurants in this state buy their fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. The Cafe Provence in the town of Brandon serves a seasonally changing menu and the food comes mainly from local farms.

We do a lot of weekend trips, and I am always on a look out for new destinations. This book is aimed at a food lover and is great at pointing out great places to eat. Being a foodie myself this was one of the things I really enjoyed about the book as the author clearly went on these trips, talked to the locals, and found hidden treasures that a person driving by may not find on his own.

The book covers the following 5 trips:

1 Virginia: The Crooked Road: Heritage Music Trail
2 Vermont: Leaf Peeps & Harvest Eats
3 Minneapolis/Milkwaukee: A Moveable Feast 4 Alice Waters' Culinary Tour
4 California: Waters' Culinary Tour
5 Eugene,OR/ Vancouver,BC: Whistle-Stop Brewery Tour

Each trip starts with a short synopses of why you might enjoy this trip. The author gives a quick summary:
(1) The best time of the year to go.
(2) The time frame recommended for a trip.
(3) The number of miles you will...Read more
