It certainly far exceeds any other guide to OxCam I've come across. And it will travel with me again.
If you have the least interest in the history and architecture of the two towns, get this book! It's very helpful with both the big picture and such details as what's what in this hall or that chapel. For example, there's over three pages on Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, with a wealth of information on when this and that was constructed and by whom. This review is from: Blue Guide Oxford & Cambridge, Sixth Edition (Paperback) There was nothing in this book that exceeded the little guides provided by the local travel board. These are small towns so expecting an in depth guide was unreasonable I suppose. The Oxford: A Cultural and Literary Companion was much more informative about the city and fun to read.

It is superb in every way. I was most impressed by the details of the construction of the college chapels and the artwork they contained; how could a guide be so compact yet so thorough? Easy to slip in a coat pocket so you look less like a tourist when striding through college gates, easy to slip out and reference when some striking architectural feature raises a question. Superb. |
