Product Description
This bestselling manual—now thoroughly revised and updated—is designed for anyone who wants to chart a course in the wilderness: hiker, backpacker, snowshoer, skier, fisherman, or hunter. Step by step, it teaches the skills that enable you to answer the vital questions: Where am I now? Which way do I head to reach my destination? How far is it? And how long will it take me to get there?
Included here are the basics of interpreting maps and orienting by compass, as well as more advanced techniques for measuring distances and estimating travel times; determining and adjusting for local declination around the globe; using an altimeter to add the dimension of height to one’s position; and navigation by means of sun and stars. In updating the late W. S. Kals’s text, Clyde Soles focuses on the latest developments in technology and equipment, such as digital mapping software and handheld GPS units, and provides an overview of marine navigation for sea kayakers. Visuals include a full-color foldout topographic map for reference and practice, plus dozens of helpful drawings and photographs.

Summary: Old Navigation Book 2010-08-20
Comment: The short book on navigation is obviously made by a pulp writer. It is windy and is full of useless stories about
the old days in manual navigation. While it does cover the matter of maps and compass it is neglectful in the
use of GPS, which is everywhere today. I would say you are not getting much for your money.
I would look to other publications, even government ones, that cover navigation matters more correctly.
Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: Excellent Handbook for Land Navigation. 2009-12-22
Comment: I am just now getting into land navigation using a standard magnetic compass(Brunton 8040) and a GPS(Garmin 60CSx). I also have the National Geographic PA Topo map software. I wanted more information on how to interpret topo maps and coordinates and apply the info for hiking and biking. At first I though the book had too much material on maps, but the more I got into it, I discovered that understanding maps is the foundation for using a compass and GPS. I think the book covers all aspects relative to understanding land navigation.

Summary: Informative and Helpful 2009-01-18
Comment: The book provides an easy to read, flowing style, making navigation concepts easy to understand. I found it very helpful.

Summary: not for a beginner 2007-09-07
Comment: I don't know anything about land navigation and hoped that this book would help me. But it does not explain many of the concepts, and it doesn't even have a glossary. It has a topographic map in the back, but it is hard to follow the references to it. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent guy, but I've had trouble learning from this book.
Customer Rating: 4 Star
Summary: Not for a "beginner" 2007-02-14
Comment: There is too much information in this book, much more than what is needed for the average "away for the long weekend" traveller.
It covers all the info. you need to know, even though at times it assumes that the reader is already knowledgeable about the subject of navigation.
