We're a 20 something couple who loves to travel backpack style on a budget. We don't stay in hostels, but we definitely don't spend a lot on hotels since really, you're only sleeping there. Venere . com is an amazing site for booking hotels and getting great feedback from past customers before you book. It's like the amazon.com of hotels.

This book was particularly helpful in learning how to use the tram transport to get up those hills. Granted, sometimes you may end up on the wrong hill(in the city of 7 hills), but I think that's more just genuine confusion because you need to understand them shouting a stop in Portuguese mixed with trying to pretend you know where you're going, not the fault of the book.....

We've used these slim lonely planet books for cities all over Spain, Italy and Portugal. They are amazing. I first got them on a trip to Italy, since we were visiting a few cities I hadn't been before. They were such an integral part of why we enjoyed...Read more

This book is small and thin enough to fit in a purse or a jacket pocket. It has all the information on tourist sites, museums, restaurants, hotels, shopping, nightlife, and "getting around" that you could possibly need. The book includes several maps of Lisbon, including a subway map.

Lonely Planet's "Best of Lisbon" was the only travel guide that my wife and I brought with us on our recent trip to Lisbon and we were very happy with it.

This is a good pocket guide with accurate and useful maps. However, it's not really in the Lonely Planet mold, not being oriented towards independent and low-cost travel. It doesn't even list hostels in its accomodation section.
