This review is from: Moon Michigan's Upper Peninsula (Moon Handbooks) (Paperback) I bought this book as a Christmas gift for a friend. She has lived in Northern Michigan her whole life but had not even scraped the surface of what there is to discovered across the orginal 'Big Mac' the Mackinac Bridge. My husband and I have been searching out backroads and swamps every free weekend for the last eight years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are wildlife phototgrapher & videograper trying to capture all the unique wildlife there is in this Great Lakes State we call home. The author has done an excellent job uncovering and helping people lay out a plan of attack on where to go when heading to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I would recommend this to anyone who has not truly scratched the surface of this beautiful State. Even locals don't always know what is in their backyard. Littau-Mora (Chicago) - See all my reviews This review is from: Moon Michigan's Upper Peninsula (Moon Handbooks) (Paperback) Used this guide on a recent bike tour in the UP. Overall it's useful enough, but clearly some of the entries (especially restaurants) have not been double-checked in a good long time. Went to some recommended places that were complete dumps. Also, there were numerous good places that have clearly been open for a few years but were not mentioned at all. We got the idea that maybe the author did a good amount of his legwork by telephone, or maybe online. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: By This review is from: Moon Michigan's Upper Peninsula (Moon Handbooks) (Paperback) needs some updating. Also, I would recommend you buy their Michigan guide rather this one. Pretty much all the info contained in the UP guide is in the Michigan guide, plus of course you get the guide to the lower peninsula (or whatever it is called). In general I like the Moon guides best for all purpose guide books. They discuss outdoor activities more than most others of the genre and will recommend mom and pop motels. Most guides steer you towards chains, luxury resorts and/or bed and breakfasts/country inn type places. Chain motels have their place, but a staying at a country inn is my idea of hell. Actually, if I was grading on a curve with all the MI guides I have checked out, I would probably give this 5 stars. |
