I think these Nat Geo books are the best. Not for hotels or restaurants, but outstanding for deiscovering sights that appeal to you with their fantastic photos of each place they review.

National Geographic makes some of the best travel guides. This guide is small enough to carry around in your hand, but it is filled with a load of information. This book covers the history of the city and it has some beautiful color photos. You can easily plan your trip to Los Angeles because the guide beaks the city down by region and lists plenty of sites that are not the typical tourist attractions. I bought the San Francisco Travelers Guide prior to my vacation and I was just as pleased with it. All and all National Geographic is the leader when it comes to travel.
