I bought this map (as well as companion maps for Boston, Paris, and London) because it seemed to offer the best in durability, convenience, readability, and sheer ingeniousness. It is laminated for strength, offers two main maps (uptown Manhattan and downtown Manhattan), contains a map of the subway system (Manhattan portion only), and a detail map of Greenwich Village, where in Compass Maps' opinion the action is (and as an indicator of the apparent target audience; sorry, they missed with me--I am 64). The two main maps pop open (through some origami-like magic) when you open the map like a book, and then fold closed effortlessly when you're done. The whole thing fits easily into a shirt pocket or a wallet pocket. Brilliant and highly readable! The only drawback is the utter disregard for the outer boroughs. I look forward to the appearance of similar maps for Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and maybe even Staten Island.

I used this map when I took the train into New York City. It has everything on it that you need to get around the city without being bulky. Definately use this map if you are checking out New York City!

Bought several maps and guides for my NYC trip. Hardly touched the others, but used this one constantly!
Fits in a pocket and can be whipped out in a second to get your bearings then back into the pocket. If you plan on staying in Manhattan and hitting the big tourist spots I highly recommend this map as it is much quicker than even an iPhone or other electronic device.
Only supplement I would suggest would be a NYC subway map. This popout worked perfect for all the large subway stops but I got turned around ending up in a 'local' subway stop that my popout couldn't help me with. (Those subways are DEEP underground, so doubt your iPhone would be any help.) So popout map in the pocket and subway map in your bag for the JIK.
