I have yet to even finish this 1000 page book, but know already that its going to be invaluable for my Mediterranean cruise in October. It does exactly what I need; tells you how to get to the places you want to see in the fastest and most efficient way possible, offers invaluable insight into the idiosyncrasies of each port destination, and of the cruise ship experience in general, and provides very practical guidance all around. This is going to be my cruise ship "bible," without a doubt, I will be carrying this little thing with me wherever I go. This book is targeted at the adventure travelers who want to make the most of every port city. Rick Steves offers invaluable advice as to which excursions are worth paying for and which are a run fro your money. If you're going on a cruise to the Med, this is the best book there is. Thank goodness someone finally wrote a practical book that is worth the money. I've seen what else is out there--why waste $20 plus for a book of color...Read more

I am a huge fan of Rick Steves' books. My husband and I enjoy cruising and will try to arrive a few days before we leave in order to explore the town of embarkation on our own. We've used Rick's books for independent touring of London, Barcelona, Rome and Naples and found them to be perfect for our needs. This year we had a 14 day Mediterranean cruise planned for October - I bought this book and it was just what we needed to plan port days on our own in several of the cities we visited. Previously we almost always took a shore excursion. While pricey, we've lucked out with very good tour guides. However we also wanted to go out on our own - to do that backdoor traveling Rick encourages. With Rick's new book we toured Venice (his vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal is excellent), Corfu, Mykonos, Split and Dubrovnik on our own - and we enjoyed every moment! Even if this book results in you buying one less shore excursion, it will have paid for itself. The book is terrific - only...Read more

I find Rick Steves to be very knowledgeable and helpful with his advice. He explains things in such an easy to understand way that some of the nervousness you may have had about exploring a foreign place for the first time goes away. As a first attempt at doing a cruise destinations book, it isn't bad. I was looking forward to bringing this guidebook along on our cruise. However, I was disappointed to discover that only 2 out of the 4 ports we will be visiting were included in the book. It didn't include Messina in Sicily or Kusadasi in Turkey. We will be travelling on the popular Royal Caribbean line, not a private cruise company going to exotic out of the way locations. Given that, I felt like the book wasn't a good value for me. The two ports that are included are very detailed with lots of helpful tips. I referenced the website mediterranean-cruise-ports-easy.com for those ports not included in the book. It would be helpful if the Amazon information section explaining...Read more
