There comes a time in every man's life when he says to himself, "Holy Sh*t! I'm about to be eaten by a bear!"
Tony James Slater went to Ecuador, determined to become a man.
It never occurred to him that 'or die trying' might be an option...
The trouble with volunteering in a South American animal refuge is that everything wants a piece of you. And the trouble with being Tony, is that most of them got one.
Just how do you 'look after' something that's trying it's damnedest to kill you and eat you?
And how do you find love when you a) don't speak the language, and b) are constantly covered in excrement and entrails?
If only he'd had some relevant experience. Other than owning a pet rabbit when he was nine. And if only he'd bought some travel insurance...
That Bear Ate My Pants is the hilarious tale of one man's quest to better himself. Whether losing a machete fight with a tree, picking dead tarantulas out of a tank of live ones or sewing the head back on to a partially decapitated crocodile, Tony's misadventures are ridiculous, unbelievable and always entertaining.
Long before Sky One got involved, there were already plenty of Idiots Abroad. This is the story of one of them...

When I was reading the beginning chapters of this book, I had to stop uncountable times to laugh. As I got deeper into this true story, though, I found myself increasingly moved by the author's love for the wild animals in his care. To say he risked life and limb to help him is merely a statement of fact, and his heartbreak when one died or suffered was expressed in a touching, yet non-sentimental way.
To read this book is to take the most comfortable kind of vacation. You'll feel as if you're there, except that you won't be slogging through swamps, roasting in the mid-day sun, or freezing when that sun goes down. Ecuador sounds like a beautiful country that I have no plans to visit.
I so hope the author is working on another book. I will be looking for it. Lucky you, all the fun awaits you.

"That Bear Ate My Pants" is a throroughly entertaining read - once I started it I found it almost impossible to put it down! There are comedy moments a-plenty, one or two extremely touching moments and lots of interesting stories that give the reader an excellent view into what it would be like to volunteer in an animal rescue sanctuary in South America....by the end of the book I found myself bemoaning the fact that I had never taken the opportunity to do anything like this and wondering whether or not I'm too old to try now (which I am).
Alongside the "memoiresque" account of experiences volunteering the book also gives the reader an insight into South America itself, the people, the forests, the beaches.....and of course the amazing work done by animal protection agencies - who mostly seem to be volunteers.
Most of all I was captivated by the stories about the various animals that arrived at the sanctuary, their characters and behaviours as well as back...Read more

Halfway through this book, my boyfriend (over breakfast) looks at me as I've laughed for the fifth time during the meal and says, "I've never seen you laugh so much at a book."
Yeah. It's that damn funny.
I lurrrve travel writing; if I were to pick a favorite genre, it would definitely be books like this. I loved living (and volunteering) vicariously through this author's narrative. This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it - especially if you need a laugh!
