"... [offers] a bountiful amount of concise information... goes beyond the usual sights to present lesser-known options. Maps embellish the down-to-earth text." -- Prodigy Travel Board "Out of all the travel books I purchased for my Alaska trip this one proved to be the most entertaining and useful. When I recieved this book I expected just another guide book but I couldn't stop reading - the anecdotes and suggestions were as compelling as a good novel. It felt like a nice, long letter from a friend who wanted to be sure I had a great trip. While traveling I found most of their suggestions right on the money. I tried the activities they suggested and was glad I steered clear of their warnings! It turned out to be the only guide book I brought along that I actually used regularly on the trip. One draw back is that there are very few maps of the smaller local areas and the maps that are included do not give you a sense of scale. Also, the title is a bit of a misnomer, I almost did not order this book because I thought "adventure guide" meant it was only for sportspeople, kayakers and campers. But that is far from the truth, this book is great for the independent traveler who wants a leisurely trip, as well as a person who wants something a little more challenging." -- Amazon reviewer
"The ideal traveling companion, and a wonderful book for the armchair traveler." -- Midwest Book Review
"... packs in fine details." -- Reviewer's Bookwatch
"Highly recommended... " -- Library Journal
The focus of this book is the Alaska Marine Highway, which serves as a lifeline for many coastal communites in Alaska. This ferry system a total of nine boats links tiny coastal communites and large cities alike. It runs from Washington, up the Inside Passage, all the way to the Aleitians in the far north, a total of 3,500 miles. The Adventure Guide to The Inside Passage & Coastal Alaska follows this route, telling you everything you need to know about the ships themselves, the sights and the towns. Tours on land flightseeing, kayaking, canoeing, boating are covered. The book is targeted at anyone traveling in this region, not just those taking the ferry, and has full information on what to see and do in each town, where to stay and eat and how to get out of town. Extensive details about wildlife, including the best places to see some, and how to be an eco-conscious traveler.

The Inside Passage & Coastal Alaska Adventure Guide (Adventure Guides)
This review is from: The Inside Passage & Coastal Alaska Adventure Guide (Adventure Guides) (Kindle Edition)
I have the print version of this book, and it is one of the best for the Inside Passage, but the Kindle version is unusable due to the fact that there is no Active Table of Contents. How does one flip through to the section on Wrangell, for instance? A search for Wrangell brings up 26 pages, with approx 5 locations on each page. I am very disappointed, and would return, except one can't return a Kindle version.

This book is oriented toward people who are doing the Inside Passage by ferry rather than cruise ship. Throughout the book there is constant snottiness toward cruises.
I went by cruise ship and still found the book worth the price. If you are taking ferry boats, then this is the book to buy.
The author does grudgingly admit that cruising is economical. Yes. I got 7 nights lodging, all the gourmet food I could eat, transportation to four cities, and an excursion to Hubbard Glacier for $1000. If my companion had had a more flexible schedule, I could have done it for $700. I.e., $100/day. Pretty hard to do better than that.
